  1. Consult a physician.

You may need to plan a preconception check-up ahead of time to ensure everything is fine. Your doctor will discuss with you about preconception health care, supplements to take or adjustment to medications if you have a condition.

 

Your baby’s health will also be influenced by genetic factors. From pre-existing medical conditions to fertility issues, you may want to get them analysed before you conceive as they can take a toll on new-borns.

 



  1. Eat and drink well.

That said, eat enough, not over-eat. Ensure fruits & vegetables are within your daily intake. This is because they are beneficial in obtaining sufficient source of vitamins and minerals in your diet.

 

Start eating a variety of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables every day, and reduce your unhealthy-fat intake. Follow through a healthy course of meal with occasional cheat day and days when your pregnancy craves heighten.

 

It couldn’t be stressed enough to stay hydrated. Consume adequate amount of water during the day and cut down sweetened beverages. It's okay to indulge your soda craving once in a while but don’t make it a habit to consume daily.

 

Studies have shown that sweetened beverages are associated with increased risks in health conditions like obesity, asthma and depression.

 



  1. Get sufficient rest while you can.

A good vitality before conceiving will keep your spirit and general wellbeing lifted. It is advisable to get a full 7 - 9 hours of sleep daily. When you get rejuvenating shut-eyes, you will notice the boost of energy and find your prolonged good mood rewarding.

 

You can also do some light exercises & yoga to induce quality sleep at night. The amount of exercise you can do should be in accordance with your overall health. In short, know your limits.

 

Pick something light like walking that you can do right after meal. If you want something more challenging, try vigorous activities like jogging, cycling, or uphill hiking. Greater effort yields additional health benefits.

 

     

    4. Abstain from Smoking, Alcohol, and Drugs.

Smoking is known to increase the risk of birth defects and even miscarriage. If your partner is a smoker, then it's time for him to call it quit. There's not much difference between a mom-smoker and second-hand smoking. Swap for another option like chewing gum or simply replacing the habit with new hobbies to keep you occupied.

 

Limit unnecessary drug and alcohol intake for now. If you are taking birth control pills, stop them for the time being to increase your chance in getting pregnant. Alcohol can harm a growing fetes even if it is lightly consumed.

Getting your body prep for gestation is crucial as you are making room for one. Prioritize your wellbeing at the moment and make sure you are mentally and physically happy and healthy.
